    Tasty Tea Tastings

Wine tastings have become commonplace. Still don'
t know your Earl Grey from your English Breakfast?
    Host a tea-tasting party!

Prepare for your party by choosing a selection of
loose teas. Tea bags are convenient for everyday
use. But for a tasting, loose tea is preferable.
That way you can actually see and touch the
    leaves.

Pick about five teas for your tasting. It is best
to stick to a theme. Try all green teas, or black
teas. Put a small amount of each tea in a small
bowl or saucer. Your guests can touch or smell it
before it's brewed. Set out a clean tea cup for
each cup they will taste. Clear class or cups
with white interiors work best. You want to be
able to see the color of the tea.

Use a pot to brew each type of tea. Put one
teaspoon of tea per cup in the bottom of the pot.
Pour in boiling water. Let it brew, or steep, for
three to five minutes. Then serve.

Have each guest pick up the cup. Look at the
color of the tea. Give it a sniff. What do you
smell? Are there any predominant scents that you
recognize? Is the scent pleasing? Too strong? Too
    pungent? Just right?

Next, take a sip. Make it a small sip. Roll the
tea around on your tongue. What do you taste? Now
swallow. How does it taste now? Take your first
taste with the tea plain and unsweetened. You may
add milk, lemon, or sweetener to the tea later.

Follow this procedure for each type of tea. In
between teas, munch a cracker. This will clear
your palate. Pick your favorite teas and write
down their names. Make these new teas part of
    your regular tea repertoire!
